![]() ![]() Once, Shane came home from a game and repeated a couple of choice words he heard on the Virginia Tech sideline to his mom. It didn't take long before he graduated from backyard coaching to carrying the slack of his dad's headset cord on Saturday afternoons. “I felt like I wanted to be a coach,” Shane said, “and I felt like I was coaching.” One of the neighborhood kids stood on the edge of the field below the makeshift press box, communicating Shane's plays to another neighbor and Shane's younger sister, Casey. He stood on their two-story deck, a Fisher Price headset hugging his noggin as he surveyed the big field behind the house and directed friends below. While Frank worked to turn the Virginia Tech program around as the Hokies' new head coach, 10-year-old Shane took charge of his own team. “So it's odd how this worked out.”įrank and Cheryl Beamer had a feeling their son might follow in his dad's footsteps from the time they moved to Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1987. “I kind of followed the program,” Beamer said on Friday. Most recordings were of SEC coaches, but among the Butch Joneses and Kirby Smarts was a young coach making a splash in the Big 12.īeamer isn't quite sure why he stopped on Lincoln Riley's show.īut after watching one episode, Beamer made Riley and Oklahoma part of his regular late-night rotation.īeamer had no way of knowing then that the man he watched analyze the Sooners every week would hire him to be his assistant head coach for the offense. “I'm kind of a nerd when it comes to coaching,” Beamer said with a bashful grin. He picked one from the list and started watching, taking notes and absorbing everything. ![]() He scrolled through the dozens of recordings until he got to a list of coaches' shows. Still wired from a day of drawing up plans for Georgia's tight ends and special teams, Beamer settled into a seat in his living room, flipped on the television and cued up the DVR. Most nights, Shane Beamer slipped through the door of his darkened house in Athens, Georgia, long after his wife and three young children had gone to bed. ![]()
